Cultural Experience PackageTime Schedule

During your Cultural Experience Package, you will experience Japanese calligraphy and tea ceremony after listening to a commentary on the history of Nagoya’s Sengoku period in English. As you gain understanding of their connection, you can develop a deeper connection to the traditional techniques you learn.
Chonoya's Cultural Experience Package is designed to flow naturally and guide you with care through each step.

01Arrival at Chonoya

Chonoya is located in a quiet residential area 10 minutes away from Sakae by car, ahead of Tsuruma Park (famous for its cherry blossoms) and Nagoya Institute of Technology, which is renowned worldwide in advanced research fields. You will recognize Chonoya immediately by the red curtain at the front bearing the swallowtail butterfly family crest.

02History Commentary about the Sengoku Period

Even if you have a basic knowledge of history, your understanding of Japanese culture will become deeper. You will listen to a 15-minute commentary with an easy-to-understand slide show about Nagoya in the Sengoku period.

03Japanese Calligraphy Experience

Wearing an apron and arm cover to protect your clothes from the ink, the lesson will be held in a space with large tables and chairs on the second floor. You will drip some water on the inkstone and slowly rub down an ink-stick, concentrating on the unique smell of the ink in the quiet atmosphere.

After learning the basics of Japanese calligraphy, such as how to hold and move the brush, you will gradually learn how to elegantly write letters on rice paper. You will select symbols with your favorite meaning and designs from many samples, and time is provided for you to write freely with your own sensitivity with lots to practice.

When you have gained the confidence to be able to write your own Japanese characters, you will write your final symbol on a clean copy of paper, and your work will be framed as a souvenir of your wonderful experience with Japanese calligraphy.

04Tea Ceremony Experience

Afterwards, you will move to the tea room on the first floor. Because the room is designed with traditional tatami mat flooring, if you are not good at sitting in the formal Japanese seiza position, a cushion or legless chair can be provided.

You will be presented with a verbal introduction about the tea room setting and utensils in English. Then, you will experience receiving the matcha tea as a guest, served by the host. A manual of the tea ceremony ritual in presented in English so you can follow along.

When you get used to the atmosphere, you will have a chance to try serving the tea yourself. Calm your mind and feel the nostalgia of 400 years of history to truly feel the spirit of the tea ceremony.

05Souvenirs and Sightseeing Information

We offer Japanese hand-crafted goods at the shop, including our original items only available at Chonoya. Cash or credit cards are accepted for payment. Free Wi-Fi is also available for your convenience to plan your next experience in Nagoya.

06Free Time for Photos

Photo shooting is OK anywhere in our farmhouse. Feel free to take photos of your favorite scenes as much as you like of both the Japanese calligraphy experience and tea ceremony experience. The kimono display on the 2nd floor is one of our most popular photo spots.

*Please refrain from shooting video while the host serves tea in the tea ceremony.

Chonoya's Cultural Experience Package is a 2-and-a-half hour plan to give you a unique and exciting lesson in Japan's rich history and culture through authentic Japanese calligraphy and tea ceremony.
